ABOUT THIS CABIN VAN
Over the space of a few years we started to get the sneaking feeling that a bigger house, a bigger mortgage, better jobs and better cars wasn’t the right path for us. We couldn’t understand why we were working jobs we didn’t love, to pay for a house we didn’t love, and to only go away in our little campervan for a few weeks a year. We talked about disappearing in our van every time we came back from a trip, but could never quite get the courage to do it.
Steven had been a barista for years, but more recently had become a postman. Better money, better job security, technically a better job. I (Amy) ran a speciality tea shop. There’s most definitely worse jobs in the world and I was lucky enough to work with an amazing team of like minded people (and had tea and coffee on tap, most importantly) but I knew it wasn’t something I could do forever and I desperately wanted something more fulfilling.
Then came the pandemic. Suddenly one of us was furloughed, we both caught suspected covid, went into lockdown and were absolutely miserable. We realised we weren’t invincible, and life was too short to be living a lifestyle we weren’t content with. This was the push we needed. We put our house on the market, made a few modifications to our little campervan , sold the majority of our things and headed straight to Scotland. We were very aware that just selling our house wasn’t the most financially smart idea, but honestly, we didn’t care. The fear of growing old and regretting not doing something different with our lives was greater than the fear of doing it and regretting it.
Luckily, after a few months living in our little van, we realised we absolutely loved the slower pace of van life but could do with a bit more room. We’d seen a lot of people driving around Scotland in older vehicles and admired their uniqueness and character. After a few weeks of hunting online, and nearly buying a huge Hymer, I spotted our talbot express on Facebook marketplace. We viewed it, loved it, picked it up and spent just one day quickly moving in and figuring everything out with the help of my parents before heading straight back up to Scotland.
One thing we hadn’t really thought about, and planned on just completely winging, was making money. We’d toyed with the idea of getting campsite jobs or barista jobs, but didn’t completely like the idea of having to be in one place. Suddenly we had all this extra time and all our creativity took over. I bought a loom and started weaving bookmarks. Steven started carving spoons. We created an Etsy shop and had so much support from family, friends and the van life community that our little shop became quite successful.
Weaving and carving has now become our full time job, and we have never been happier. We live a slower, simpler life and spend our days creating, walking our dog and exploring new places.
